A device (1) for the storage of bar-shaped workpieces (2) of different lengths is used predominantly for the automatic, computer-controlled supply of a cutting machine with these workpieces (2). To this end, bay compartments (5) are arranged opposite and above one another in bay aisles (6), and a lift truck (7) and a lifting device (8) are provided for loading the bay compartments (5) and for removing the workpieces (2) from the bay compartments (5). Each time a new workpiece (2) is introduced into the entire device (1), its length is determined in a length-measuring device (9) by recording the distance between the outside ends of such a workpiece (2). The value determined in this way is input into the memory of the computer for storage control. This length is thereby determined in a very precise manner, in such a way that the computer can select a workpiece (2) as accurately as possible when a request is made for a workpiece (2) to be processed on a cutting machine (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
