PURPOSE:To obtain an aromatic hydrocarbon having a side chain alkyl group having more carbon atoms than the raw material, by reacting an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon with an alkylating agent in the presence of a catalyst containing an alkali metal and cesium borate on activated carbon as a carrier. CONSTITUTION:The alkyl side chain of an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon is alkylated to give an aromatic hydrocarbon having a side chain alkyl group having more carbon atoms than the raw material. In the process, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst containing an alkali metal, e.g. K, Ru or Cs, and cesium borate on activated carbon as a carrier. In the above-mentioned reaction, the alkali metal in an amount of 5-25wt% based on the activated carbon and cesium borate in an amount of 1-20wt% based on the activated carbon are preferably supported on the carrier. The catalyst is prepared by dipping the activated carbon in an aqueous solution containing cesium nitrate and cesium borate dissolved therein, evaporating the solution to dryness, redrying the resultant solid, and calcining the solid. The alkylation reaction temperature is preferably 380-550 deg.C. |
