The apparatus for generating a vacuum is intended particularly for milking installations and comprises a vacuum pump having an electric drive motor and silencer. The vacuum pump (1), which is designed as a liquid-ring pump in a known manner, is arranged, together with its drive motor (8), in a closed, but not gastight fluid reservoir (2) below the maximum fluid level (3) thereof. Within the reservoir (2) the silencer (4) is connected to the vacuum pump (1) on the discharge side thereof. The blow-off outlet (5) of the silencer (4) opens into the interior of the reservoir (2). The vacuum pump (1) is provided with a ring liquid connection (6), so that the fluid from the reservoir can be supplied directly or indirectly.
