PURPOSE:To appropriately steer a ship, by automatically detecting a precise ship-azimuth while affection due to ship-perturbation is eliminated. CONSTITUTION:A hull stress detector 1 detects stress produced in a hull 2 and delivers a detectin signal to a cable connector 4 through a hull-stress signal converter 3. A ship azimuth signal converter 5 delivers a ship azimuth signal to a cable connecter 4. A steering angle signal converter 6 delivers a steering angle to the cable connecter 4. The cable connecter 4 sends these signals to a safe course control device body 16. A hullstress operator 10 reads a hull averaged stress at every moment, and then compares it with the computed averaged stress to determine a ship-azimuth in which the stress becomes minimum. The ship- azimuth having the minimum stress is fed to an output control signal section 14 and a steering angle controller 15 to be converted into a control signal which is delivered to a steering unit 7.
