PURPOSE:To recover selectively 5-propenyl-2-norbornene, by reacting a cuprous halide with a reaction product of 1,3-pentadiene with cyclopentadiene at a specific temperature, and decomposing thermally the resultant complex compound. CONSTITUTION:A reaction mixture, obtained by the Diels-Alder reaction of 1,3- pentadiene with cyclopentadiene, and containing dimer of the 1,3-pentadiene, 5-propenyl-2-norbornene, methyltetrahydroindene and dicyclopentadiene is brought into contact with a cuprous halide at 55-80 deg.C to give a complex compound, which is then thermally decomposed at 100-140 deg.C to recover the 5-propenyl-2- norbornene. Cuprous chloride is preferred for the cuprous halide, and the concentration thereof is 1.0-5.0mol based on 1mol aimed substance to be extracted. EFFECT:The complex compound of only the aimed substance can be formed by limiting the temperature to the above-mentioned range.
