A thermoplastics container is designed in a frustoconical shape in its lower region with a conicity of any desired shallowness. In its upper region it has a stacking rim having a constant cross-section for almost its entire height. The upper edge of the stacking rim and the transition region to the conical lower part of the circumferential surface of the container are each constricted, on the one hand producing a good stability of the stacking rim and on the other hand producing a defined stop edge when a plurality of containers are stacked into one another. In order to produce containers of this kind, advantageously a process is used in which the outer shape of the container is produced in that stretched plastics material is shrunk onto a mould core defining the shape of the container with the application of heat. Virtually any desired container shape can be produced in this manner. The container base can be already integrated in the shrinking process or, however, subsequently using known processes, adhesively bonded into the circumferential surface of the container or welded thereto. The process can be readily automated using conventional control and handling means.
