PURPOSE:To obtain a porous membrane having good selectivity for permeation of molecules, a high rate of permeation and good stability, by uniformly mixing a base with an oxidizing agent, forming the mixture into a polymer membrane and oxidizing this membrane in an oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A base for a polymer membrane, such as cellulose acetate or polyacrylate, is dissolved in a suitable organic solvent. This solution is mixed uniformly with a solution of an oxidizing agent (e.g., permanganate or perchlorate) in an organic solvent (e.g., acetone or ethyl acetate) by means of, for example, a mixer. The resulting solution is cast on a flat plate to form a polymer membrane by a solvent casting method. When this membrane is treated in an oxidizing atmosphere (e.g., oxygen, ozone, or electron beams), the oxidizing agent uniformly dispersed in the membrane oxidizes polymer chains around its molecules, with consequent formation of pores within the membrane. In this way, the purpose porous membrane can be obtained. |
