The stream of overlapping printed sheets fed on a first conveyor belt (1) at a predetermined first speed is transferred to a partial stream, at the end of the first conveyor belt (2). In the end region of the first conveyor belt, the printed sheets of the partial stream to be separated-off, together with the second conveyor belt, are accelerated in the direction of conveyance of the two conveyor belts to a second speed. The sheets of the partial stream are transferred onto the second conveyor belt. The second conveyor and the sheets on it are slowed down again to the first speed before the leading end of the remaining stream of over-lapping sheets, as defined as a result of the separating-off of the first partial stream, reaches the end of the first conveyor belt.
