PURPOSE:To ensure an easy shift of a cursor by using an encoding means which produces a signal to command the shift of the cursor with use of the outputs of plural switch means working in response to the slope of an operating matter of a pointing device as an input of the encoding means. CONSTITUTION:For an input device 4 of a computer, a support 7 is set at the center part of the upper surface of a base 6. A projecting spherical support part 8 is formed at the tip of the support 7, and eight contact parts 9a are provided equidistantly on the same circle around the base 6 and centering on the support 7. An operating matter 5 has a cover-shape and can be operated by a single hand, and a spherical hook part 10 is formed at the center part of the matter 5. A base support part 8 and a pivot joint are added together with a contact 9b provided at the lower edge part of the matter 5. The contacts 9a and 9b are corresponding to each other. Then all contacts are kept open with a spring 12 when the matter 5 is not operated. When the matter 5 is tilted in a certain direction, the contacts in this tilting direction is closed. Then a cursor shift command signal corresponding to the relevant contact is delivered from an encoder connected to the contact. Then the cursor is shifted.
