A water soluble anion active polyelectrolyte is bound to the fibre wall and remains there when the pulp is suspended in water at pH 4-9. The polyelectrolyte has a molecular weight greater than 100,000. The pulp has a water uptake power 4% more than untreated pulp (measured by URV). The level of polyelectrolyte is 0.01-10 % measured as dry pulp weight.
