PURPOSE:To reduce NOx without increasing smoke dust in exhaust gas by a method wherein alcohol fuel is added to the respective transfer systems of coal water slurry fed to a plurality of stages of burners in a combustion device equipped with a plurality of stages of burners and an after air port arranged in the downstream of the burners. CONSTITUTION:Coal water slurry (CWM) is drawn out of a CWM tank 21 in a header 30, past respectively through a lower stage burner piping 33, a middle stage burner piping 32, and an upper stage burner piping 31, and sprayed into a furnace 10 respectively from a lower stage burner 103, a middle stage burner 102 and an upper stage burner 101 in order to be burnt. On the other hand, alcohol fuel drawn out of an alcohol fuel tank 22 in a header 40 is sent respectively through a lower stage burner piping 43, a middle stage burner piping 42 and an upper stage burner piping 41, and, after the respective flow rate in said pipings 43, 42 and 41 being controlled by means of flow control valves 50, mixed by equal quantities respectively to a lower stage burner CWM piping 33, a middle stage burner CWM piping 32, and an upper stage burner CWM piping 31. Thus, the reduction of NOx can be established without increasing unburnt matter.
