PURPOSE:To perform continuous satisfactory annealing without generating surface flaw, by continuously passing a titanium strip through the high temp. region of a vertical type continuous annealing furnace in which there is no hearth roll in a non-contact state. CONSTITUTION:A titanium strip (a) is conveyed by inlet side pinch rolls 1 and vertically suspended in a furnace main body 3 and formed into a free loop in the lower part of the furnace body 3 while discharged from the furnace upper part by outlet pinch rolls 2. The interior of the furnace main body 3 is partitioned by a central partition wall 4 vertically suspended from the furnace lid 5 and the left side is used as a heating zone while the right side is used as a soaking zone and heating burners are provided to both zones to form a high temp. region with a temp. of 600 deg.C or more. In this state, the strip (a) is passed through the high temp. region in a non-contact state to be subjected to annealing. In this case, the bent point of the strip in the furnace is monitored by loop position detecting apparatuses 6, 6' to accurately control the loop position.
