PURPOSE:To simplify the constitution of a pattern comparator by absorbing the fluctuation to both axes of a pattern on a secondary surface with a small quantity of calculation and performing the pattern comparison to calculate the resemblance among patterns. CONSTITUTION:Switches S1 and S2 of a pattern comparator are set at the dictionary side, and the sound spectrum of a language sent from a mike 1 is extracted by a filter bank 2 and applied to a binary coding part 4 via a sound section separating part 3. Only this sound section is extracted and binary-coded, and this output is applied to a fractionating part 6 for fractionation of the part where the spectrum exists. At the same time, the feature signal of a binary- coded pattern is applied to a level shift part 5 and the overall level is lowered by 1. Then the part where no spectrum exists is set at 1 by a fractionating part 7. The outputs of both parts 6 and 7 are added together at an adding part 8 and registered in a dictionary 9. Then the switches S1 and S2 are switched to the recognition side when the sound is recognized. A collating part 10 compares a binary-coded pattern with each pattern of the dictionary 9 to calculate the degree of resemblance. The result of this calculation is delivered to an output part 11.
