PURPOSE:A monosaccharide is oxidized with an O2-containing gas in an aqueous alkali in the presence of a Pd/C catalyst treated with lead in a specific manner, to give a monosaccharide oxide of high purity used as a chelating agent, or a detergent for metal or glass surfaces, in high yield. CONSTITUTION:Activated carbon is suspended in an aqueous solution of a lead compound such as lead acetate or nitrate under stirring at room temperature to the boiling point to effect complete adsorption of the lead salt. The resultant activated carbon is dried at 100-200 deg.C, then suspended in water and a palladium compound such as palladium chloride is added to the suspension. Then, the palladium compound is reduced with formalin and filtered and rinsed with water to give a Pd/C catalyst containing a lead compound. The resultant catalyst is added to an aqueous solution of a monosaccharide such as glucose to effect oxidation at 30-60 deg.C under stirring, as a gas containing oxygen is fed and simultaneously an aqueous alkali is added dropwise to keep the pH of the solution 8-11, thus giving a monosaccharide oxide such as sodium gluconate. |
