PURPOSE:To deposit the titled compound used as an antiviral agent in an ophthalmic ointment, eye drop or embrocation as fine crystals, by dissolving idoxuridine in ammonia under specific concentration conditions, adding an acid thereto under agitation, and neutralizing the resultant solution. CONSTITUTION:''Idoxuridine'' of the formula is dissolved in ammonia in <=5wt% concentration to give an aqueous solution in <=15wt% concentration, and an acid e.g. hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, is added to neutralize the resultant aqueous solution. Thus, ''Idoxuridine'' unstable to heat is deposited as fine crystals by the chemical method not by physical pulverization method.
