NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R<1> is alkyl, cyclohexyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, benzyl, or alkoxyalkyl; R<2> is cyano, alkylcarbonyl, benzylcarbonyl, or phenylcarbonyl). EXAMPLE:Isopropyl 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidenecyanoacetate of formula II. USE:Agent for activating the hepatic function and remedy for hepatic diseases. PREPARATION:The objective compound can be prepared by reacting the compound of formula III (M is alkali metal or ammonium) (e.g. 2-cyano-2-isopropoxycarbonyl-ethylene-1,1-dithiolate potassium salt) with glyoxal in the presence of an acid such as acetic acid, in an inert organic solvent such as benzene preferably at about 15 deg.C.
