PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate of organic compounds, economically in an industrial scale, by reacting a halogenated ketone compound with sodium hydrosulfide in water or in an alcohol solvent, and reacting the reaction product with malononitrile in the presence of an organic base. CONSTITUTION:The thiophene compound of formula II can be prepared by (1) reacting the halogenated ketone compound of formula I (R is 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; X is Cl or Br) with sodium hydrosulfide in water or in an alcohol solvent at -15-+5 deg.C, and (2) reacting the reaction product with malononitrile in the presence of an organic base (e.g. pyridine) at -5-+20 deg.C. It is essential to carry out the reactions at the above temperature ranges for producing the objective thiophene compound at a low cost, in an industrial scale, without producing by-products. USE:Useful as a coupling component of disperse azo dye. It can couple the diazo component to the 5-position of the compound of formula II.
