PURPOSE:To extend a limit value of distance measurement without detecting a body on an adjacent lane, and prevent a preceeding car from being overlooked at a curve point by rotating the direction of light transmission in parallel to a road surface and making a repetitive sweep. CONSTITUTION:A light transmitter and a sweeping means are controlled through a control means to rotate the direction of light transmission in parallel to the road surface for the repetitive sweep, and reflected pulse light from the preceeding car is photodetected by a photodetector to measure the distance to the preceeding car. This constitution expands a detection area as compared with when the spread angle and direction of a transmit light beam are fixed to extend the limit value of the distance measurement without detecting an object on an adjacent lane, and a nondetection area is reduced to prevent the preceeding car from being overlooked at a curve point.
