PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance, by oxidizing a 5C chain compound having one CH3 in the side chain thereof in the vapor phase with molecular oxygen in the presence of a metallic oxide catalyst containing Sn, Co, etc. and O as essential components and further optionally a metallic element of Grou I a and Al, etc. CONSTITUTION:A 5C chain compound having one CH3 in the side chain thereof, e.g. isoprene, 2-methyl-1-butanol or alpha,beta-dimethylacrolein, is oxidized in the vapor phase with molecular oxygen in the presence of a metallic oxide catalyst expressed by formula I (XI is Co, Ni, P, Fe, Zr, Pb, Cr, etc,; XII is K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Zn, Cd, Tl, etc.: XIII is Si, Ti, Al, In, Mo, Sb, etc.; b is 0.001-10; c is 0-8; d is 0-10 when a is 1) to give the titled substance. The resultant product contains a compound expressed by formula II which is a novel substance. USE:A raw material for organic industrial chemicals.
