The installation for biological purificn. of effluent water comprises a basin with a partition which defines an annular flow channel provided with means to move the water through this channel between an inlet and an overflow outlet and to aerate the water. A further partition is arranged parallel to the longitudinal median plane and extends over part of the length of the channel to divide this into two parallel part-channels of which only one is provided with aeration means. The lengths of the respective part-channels are pref. such that the dwelling times of the water in the aerated and non-aerated sections is sufficient to produce nitrification and de-nitrification respectively.
