PURPOSE:To provide a fluorophor having long afterglow and fluorescing in a variety of colors, prepared by adding a combination of specified activator and coactivators to a matrix consisting of zinc sulfide or zinc.cadmium sulfide and forming a surface layer which contains the above fluophor and specified metal. CONSTITUTION:The sulfide fluophor is prepared by adding 10<-4>-1wt% at least one of Ag, Au and Cu as activator, 10<-6>-10<-1>wt% Ga and/or In as 1st coactivator and 5X10<-6>-5X10<-1>wt% at least one of Cl, Br, I, F and Al as 2nd coactivator to a matrix comprising zinc sulfide or zinc.cadmium sulfide of the formula (where x is 0-0.4) and forming a surface layer which contains the above fluophor and at least one of Co, Ni and Fe.
