Steel suitable for direct enamelling is made from rimmed steel which is killed and after hot- and cold rolling is calcined with recrystallisation and decarbonisation. The process is characterised in that after hot rolling the steel is rolled up at a temp. of 600-650 deg.C, esp. 625+or-15 deg.C. Pref. (i) the N content of the steel is adjusted to more than 35 ppm; (ii) the addn. of Al is controlled to give an Al content of .065 wt.%, esp. 0.03-0.05 wt.%; (iii) the redn. by cold rolling is ca. 60%; (iv) the roughness of the plate after post-rolling is more than 90 micro-inch CLA. Pref. (A) the rimmed steel is killed with Al in the pan and then cast into blocks in block moulds, or cast into plates in a continuous casting machine, or (B) rimmed steel is killed with Al during or after casting into block moulds.
