The roll is mounted in fixed and movable bearings, the movable bearing being a cylindrical roller bearing having sideways play. The outer ring of the roller bearing is fixed while the inner ring which is fixed to the end of the roll, is movable sideways w.r.t. the rollers of the bearing and the bearing unit. The roll is used as a roller casting roll for continuous casting of steel. The movable bearing can move sideways under low axial loads of a few hundred kg. to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction so that damage to the machine and the bearing is avoided.
