The subject of the invention relates particularly to the technical field of chain transmissions. The member is noteworthy in that it drives and guides and transversely holds the chain due to the fact that the teeth 1b are formed so that each of them has a thickness substantially less than the free internal width C1 of the links of the chain C, and that with respect to the imaginary median plane X-X in the thickness of the assembly of the teeth (which corresponds substantially to the free internal width of the chain), the said teeth are offset transversely in succession so that each tooth is in lateral contact via one side or flank (1d or 1e) solely against the link or the corresponding part of the chain, the said chain being guided and transversely held by the alternate offset of the teeth and the joint effort of their alternate lateral contacts. The invention applies particularly to the crank mechanisms of bicycles and similar vehicles, to sprockets with chains, etc. <IMAGE>
