The invention relates to an apparatus for finding, characterising and checking the position and size of faults in pipes and determining the length of the pipe while it is being moved longitudinally and simultaneously rotated about its longitudinal axis. The object is to solve the problem of recording the precise position of, and labelling faults determined while testing the rotating and advancing pipe and to find and characterise the faults in terms of size and, optionally, in terms of different types of fault (cracks or dimensional errors).
