The present invention relates to a method to operate a vehicle and in particular a watercraft. The vehicle (1) includes at least one combustion engine (19) which emits pollutants (35) contained in exhaust gas and/or waste water. A current position (5) of the vehicle (1) is determined by a determining system (61). The vehicle (1) is provided with a closed loop control device and/or an open loop control device (17). An amount of at least one kind of contaminant emitted by the combustion engine (19) is automatically or selectively set or adjusted depending on a determined position of the vehicle (1) and information of regulations on local pollutants or regulations on treated water. The present invention provides a device and a method to operate a vehicle (watercraft) which can meet regulations on pollutants at low cost and in a simple and reliable manner.
