The device for varying the heat content of a liquid has a gear pump (11), to the intake side of which oil under a pressure of 5 to 7 bar is admitted from the oil sump (14) of the internal combustion engine by way of a lubricating pump (12). The oil delivered by the gear pump (11) is heated by throttling at a pressure limiting valve (26) and passes into a heating device (21) with heat exchanger (20) to which the liquid gives off its heat. So that the shaft seal (52) of the gear pump is not damaged by the high pressure on the intake side, which leads to high leakages, the shaft seal is designed as a controlled gap seal with a minimal defined oil leakage, which remains constant throughout its service life. If this were not the case an excessive oil leakage would flow out by way of the gear pump, the lubrication circuit of the internal combustion engine would collapse and the latter would thus be destroyed.
