A wire electrode for cutting a workpiece electrode using erosive electrical discharges comprises a core (1), at least one portion of which conducts electricity well, and a coating (2) protecting this core (1) from heat influx due to the discharges. This coating (2), which is made up, over at least part of its thickness, by a nickel/zinc alloy with an amount of nickel sufficient to raise its resistivity to at least 10 mu OMEGA cm, constitutes a heat shield for the core (1). This shield enables the machining current allowable in the wire to be increased, and consequently the machining speed to be substantially increased. <IMAGE>
