A method of cleaning an ink jet print head in an ink jet printer is specified. A device of this type has a print head with a multiplicity of nozzles. The printing ink is fed to the print head via a supply line. A printing ink supply source is connected to the printing ink line and contains a supply of printing ink. Furthermore, a printing ink collector is provided to receive waste printing ink. In the method according to the invention, printing ink is sprayed out of the print head before the actual printing operation in order to prevent mixed printing ink which does not result in a clear printed image being used in the actual printing operation to produce characters or diagrams (Fig. 3). <IMAGE>
