In a method for sucking away dust from working tables for dental technicians, goldsmiths or the like, in which the dust which is produced is sucked away by means of a suction device and guided through a prefilter and post filter, a good suction effect and a long filter life is to be achieved while fulfilling the safety regulations, for which reason the airstream is sucked through the prefilter and forced through the post filter and the power of the suction device is raised when the volume stream VN of the air in the partial vacuum space has dropped to a value, which can be adjusted as desired, above 0.8 VN. The device for carrying out this method is characterised in that the suction device (9) is arranged between the prefilter (10) in the partial vacuum area and the post filter (12) provided in the excess pressure area.
