PURPOSE:To display easily and clearly halftone characters and their types, the superior/inferior letters, etc. respectively on a display screen, by providing a control code together with a character code for each input character and displaying the control code with inversion. CONSTITUTION:A halftone, superior or inferior, etc. are designated to a certain character displayed on a CRT18 when a document is fed, etc. Thus the character control information corresponding to the contents of said designation is stored to a corresponding character control code entry area 24 in a character control information part 22. These designated characters are displayed with inversion for discrimination from other characters. When a designated character is designated again by a cursor on a screen, a CPU11 refers to the area 24 based on the position information and transmits the code of a mark display corresponding to the contents of the area 24 to an integrated input/output controller IOP13. The IOP13 converts the mark code into a dot pattern with an access fed to a character pattern memory 19 and then displays and outputs the dot pattern. In such a way, the control is carried out with addition of a control code. Thus the halftone characters, etc. can be displayed easily and clearly on a display screen.
