The ultrasound device has an adjustable cutting tool pressing against the material's surface with a largely constant pressure. Abrasive particles are introduced between head and material. A travel encoder measures the infeed distance of the tool into the material and controls the hydraulic, magnetic or pneumatic feed so as to keep the pressure constant. A comparator compares the output of the travel encoder with a distance reference. The comparator's difference signal is passed to a controller that regulates the feed. The difference signal is amplified and shaped according to conditions, according to resonance and the shape of the pressure gradient in the control path.
