PURPOSE:To obtain an electrode wire increasing the rate of electric spark machining and hardly sticking to a body to be machined by adding Y to Cu. CONSTITUTION:This electrode wire for wire electric spark machining consists of 0.2-2.0wt% Y and the balance Cu or contains 0.2-1.0wt% Mg and/or Si furthermore. Cu in a graphite crucible is melted in a small-sized high-frequency furnace, the surface of the molten metal is covered with charcoal powder, and Y is added in the form of a mother alloy such as 20% Y-Cu alloy after raising the temp. of the molten metal to about 1,500 deg.C. When Si is added, it is also added in the form of a mother alloy such as 20% Si-Cu alloy, and after making the molten metal calm, Mg is added as required. The molten metal is immediately charged into a metallic mold, and the resulting ingot is planed, heated, and hot-worked into a rough wire with grooved rolls. The rough wire is repeatedly subjected to cold drawing and annealing to obtain an electrode wire.
