Diphenyl ether compounds of formula I <CHEM> wherein X is chlorine, bromine, iodine, methyl, CF3 or nitro; Y is fluorine or chlorine; R<1> is optionally substituted aliphatic; and R<2> is H or an alkyl group. Useful as herbicides.
