PURPOSE:To prevent slackening of an ion exchange membrane and consequent generation of a trouble in a horizontal cation exchange membrane type electrolytic cell for an NaCl soln. modified from a mercury type electrolytic cell by disposing spacers for tensing the cation exchange membrane in the cathode chamber thereof. CONSTITUTION:A horizontal cation exchange membrane type electrolytic cell is segmented to an upper anode chamber 1 and a lower cathode chamber 2 by means of a cation exchange membrane 3 in the stage of modifying an electrolytic cell for an NaCl soln. by a mercury method to said cell. A catholyte is supplied through an inlet 19 into the chamber 2, and is discharged in the form of a mixed gas-liquid phase soln. composed of NaOH and gaseous hydrogen through an outlet 20. The gaseous hydrogen is separated from the liquid in a gas-liquid separator 21 and the catholyte contg. the NaOH is returned again into the chamber 2 to increase the concn. of the NaOH. Many spacers 24 are disposed in parallel with the flow direction of the cathode in the chamber 2 to prevent the slackening of the membrane 3, thereby preventing the generation of collision of the ion exchange membrane with a cathode 16 owing to the slackening of said membrane, the disorderly flow of the catholyte and other troubles in the electrolytic operation.
