<p>A pneumatic tire and a mounting system therefor, having constructional features designed to provide optimized operational characteristics. The tire has a low aspect ratio lambda and a low height ratio theta conforming substantially to the relations lambda = 0.236/ theta and 0.32 < theta < 0.39. The mounting system includes a vehicle axle-borne drum (22) and a pair of ring members (37, 38) adapted to be securely fastened to the drum, each ring member defining a bead seat (37a, 38a), a bead restraining flange (37b, 38b) and a sidewall-supporting extension (37c, 38c) and the ring members being adhered to the tire at the beads and the lower sidewalls, A layer of a suitable sealant (53) at the juncture between each ring member and the drum renders the joints airtight. The tire includes a single ply radial carcass (33) the turn-ups (33a, 33b) of which terminate in the lower sidewall regions of the respective adhesion zones between the tire and the ring members, and each of the beads is reinforced by a relatively thin, lightweight metal member (31, 32) in the form of a single loop having no free ends. A valving system for the tire, includes a passageway in one of the ring members covered at one end by a quantity of a sealant having selfsealing properties.</p> |
