PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve further improvement in fuel efficiency of an internal combustion engine mounted with an exhaust turbocharger.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine comprises: an exhaust turbocharger which sends intake air flowing in an intake passage into a cylinder after compressing the same with a compressor driven by rotation of a turbine using energy of exhaust flowing in the exhaust passage; a valve which opens and closes a bypass passage bypassing the turbine installed in an exhaust passage; and a control device which operates the valve so that a difference between intake pressure at an upstream side of the compressor and the same at a downstream side of the compressor becomes not more than a predetermined value when an engine is in an idling operation region or a low load operation region with an accelerator opening not more than a predetermined opening or the engine is in a low rotation operation region with a rotation rate not more than a predetermined rate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
