PURPOSE:To obtain selectively the titled compound useful as an intermediate for organic syntheses with easy separation of a catalyst and low load of separation, purification, and corrosion of device, by using gamma-alumina as the catalyst, reacting dibenzyl ether with phenol in a liquid phase. CONSTITUTION:Dibenzyl ether is reacted with phenol in the presence of gamma-alumina catalyst diluted (>=about 5 times) with a solvent such as preferably decalin at 125-300 deg.C at 0.1-70atm. for 0.1-50hr in a liquid phase, to give the desired compound. gamma-Alumina has properly 100-300m<2>/g specific surface area, 0.5-1.2g/ ml bulk density, preferably high purity, and a small amount of Na suppresses extremely a reaction rate. EFFECT:Dibenzyl ether containing a small amount of ortho-benzyl-phenyl is recovered as an initial distillate, and it is used as a reaction raw material to give the desired high-purity compound without waste. |
