PURPOSE:To control easily the amt. of the paint to be coated by removing the paint flowing from the circumferential surface of a coating roll to the side faces thereof by side face scrapers during the time when the paint from a paint supplying station arrives at a coating station. CONSTITUTION:An air valve opens just prior to arrival of the first welded can body 1 at a coating station, and a specified amt. of a paint 7 per unit time is supplied from a coating nozzle 8 into the circumferential hollow groove 6b of a coating roll, and the paint on the circumferential surface 6a is coated on an exposed metallic part 3. The width of the surface 6a and the width of the part 3 are roughly equal and therefore the parts of the exposed part 3 facing the circumferential surface 6a' projecting to the outside of the groove 6b are also coated by the paint adhered originally on the part 6a' and the paint intruding from the groove 6b into the narrow gap between the part 6a' and the part 3.
