The suspension comprises two arms 1, 2 directed approximately along the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and provided on either side of this vehicle, these arms being articulated at one end to the structure of the vehicle and being rigidly connected at their other end to a cross member 5 of open cross section and suitable of undergoing torsion, the wheels 7, 8 being mounted at the ends of the cross member, each wheel being housed, partly, in a wheel passage 9, 10, a shock absorber 11 and a suspension spring 12 being combined with each wheel. The cross member 5 is sufficiently rigid in torsion and bending to withstand the forces applied to this cross member remotely from the wheels 7, 8, the shock absorber 11 and the suspension spring 12 are situated under the floor 13 of the passenger compartment, outside the wheel passage 9, 10, the anti-roll stiffness introduced by the cross member being sufficiently high to avoid needing an anti-roll bar. <IMAGE>
