The invention relates to a method and a device for the continuous control of the safety limit distance between self-propelled vehicles travelling on a dedicated track. The method of the invention is characterised in that it involves: - arranging parallel to the track two conductive resistance lines A, B and a so-called earth line M; - executing in line with each odd-numbered vehicle T1: a. the injection at the rear of the vehicle of a specific voltage e between one A of the two conductive lines and the said return line M, b. measuring continuously, at the front of the vehicle, the potential difference between the other conductive line B and said return line M, c. the rear of the vehicle a short-circuit Cc between the said other conductive line B and the said return line, - executing the same operations in line with the even-numbered vehicles T2, but reversing the order of the two conductive lines A, B, - and in generating a signal on board each vehicle for warning and/or control purposes when the potential difference measured by the vehicle in question reaches or exceeds a maximum threshold. The invention is used particularly for rail transport. <IMAGE>
