PURPOSE:To obtain polyoxymethylene whiskers which can be easily and satisfactorily dispersed in water, by simultaneously performing both the polymerization short-stopping and the surface treatment for imparting hydrophilicity by adding a surfactant to a solution for short-stopping the polymerization of trioxane. CONSTITUTION:In producing polyoxymethylene whiskers by polymerizing trioxane, a surfactant is added to a solution for short-stopping the polymerization and the solution is used to perform simultaneously polymerization short stopping and the surface treatment for imparting hydrophilicity. Solvents for trioxane which can be suitably used are nonpolar solvents such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, alicyclic hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures. The concentration of the surfactant is preferably 5-1,000ppm based on the polymerization short-stopping solution. When this concentration is excessively low, the solution can not make a full contribution to the hydrophilicity of whiskers, while when it is excessively high, an aqueous dispersion of the whiskers tends to foam during making into paper, which is undesirable.
