The top bag of a stack is partly opened by suction and fully opened by using two side spreader plates (7) and top and bottom spreader plates (6), matching the size of the bag. Both pairs of plates are tilted about horizontal axes, the ratio between the angles of tilt of the side plates and the top and bottom pair being at least 4 to 3. The side plates are swung through 75 degrees and the other two are swung through 45 degrees. The two side plates each have a rounded groove along it, about half way up, for guiding a rounded projection on a vertical edge of a plate (3) which is inserted between them. Air jets are connected to the rounded grooves. The drive for the spreader plates uses spindles at right angles, carrying bevel gears, the spindles for the side plates being driven by the spindles for the other pair.
