PURPOSE:To produce a polymer in high yields and to make it unnecessary to remove catalyst residues, by effecting the high-temperature high-pressure polymerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst obtained from a specified solid catalyst component and an organoaluminum compound. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene or a mixture of ethylene with a 3C or higher alpha-olefin is polymerized at a temperature >=125 deg.C and a pressure >=200kg/cm<2> in the presence of a catalyst obtained from (A) a solid catalyst component obtained by contacting magnesium orthosilicate with a silicon compound of formula I (wherein R<1> is H, a 1-10C alkyl, or phenyl, X<1> is a halogen, and m is 1, 2, or 3) and an alcohol of formula II (wherein R<2> is a 1-10C alkyl), and contacting the produced mixture with a titanium tetrahalide and (B) an organoaluminum compound of formula III (wherein R<3> is a 1-6C alkyl, X<2> is halogen, and n is 1.5-3). The yield of polymer per unit catalyst is high, so that the operation for removing catalyst residue can be omitted. In addition, this polymer does not cause corrosion of a molding machine during molding because the halogen content of the catalyst is low.
