PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester in good efficiency, by effecting a polycondensation reaction of a dicarboxylic acid with a diol, a polycondensation reaction of a hydroxybenzoic acid, or a like reaction in the presence of a specified quaternary salt. CONSTITUTION:An amide compound of formula I (wherein R<1>, R<2>, and R<3> are each H, alkyl, aryl, or the like) is reacted with a halogenated sulfonyl compound of formula II (wherein R<4> is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or the like, and X<1> is a halogen) to produce a quaternary salt of formula III (wherein R<5>, R<6>, and R<7> are each H, alkyl, aryl, or the like, R<8> is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or the like, and X<2> is a halogen). A polyester is obtained in good efficiency by effecting a polycondensation reaction of a dicarboxylic acid with a diol, a polycondensation reaction of a hydroxyacid composed of a benzene ring to which both a phenolic hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group are attached, or a like reaction in the presence of the above quaternary salt.
