NEW MATERIAL:The salt of the cyclohexane derivative of formula I (R is H or alkyl; R1 is alkyl). EXAMPLE:The diethanolamine salt of 3,5-dioxo-4-propionyl cylclohexane-carboxylic acid ethyl ester. USE:A plant growth regulator having low irritation to the eye and high safety. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared e.g. by reacting the compound of formula II (M is organic or inorganic cation) or formula III with the acid chloride of formula IV, and reacting the reaction product in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst. The obtained compound can be converted to a salt by reacting with equivalent or >=2 equivalent of a primary amine, secondary amine, tertiary amine, alcoholate, or a chloride of a metal such as Na, K, etc. in an organic solvent.
