The chain compressor for gaseous substances essentially comprises compression elements, which are connected in such a way by joints that when deflected on deflection sheaves or in a compression duct the compression elements perform pincer-like movements thereby compressing the gas enclosed between the compression elements. The compression occurs in a duct in order to prevent lateral escape of the gas. The joints which connect the compression elements thereby forming a continuous compressor chain may be arranged in a circumferential direction on the outside or the inside of the compressor chain. In order to dissipate the compression heat produced, the compression elements may be provided with cooling fins on the surfaces between which the gas is enclosed. In order to increase the amount of heat which the compression elements are to absorb, these may be provided with closed hollow chambers, which are filled with liquid. The compression elements are cooled by liquid or air after they have left the compression duct.
