PURPOSE:To desulfurized an acetylenic compound with a synthetic zeolite having a specific pore diameter before hydrogenating selectively the acetylenic compound in a fraction consisting essentially of olefinic hydrocarbons in the presence of a Pd based solid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A fraction consisting essentially of 3-4C olefinic hydrocarbons, e.g. obtained by caracking petroleum, is desulfurized with a synthetic zeolite, e.g. MS-4A, having >=4AAngstrom pore diameter and then an acetylenic compound in the above-mentioned fraction is selectively hydrogenated in the liquid phase in the presence of a Pd based catalyst under pressure in the state of substantially no sulfur compound under pressure. EFFECT:The catalyst performance, particularly stability of the catalyst is improved for a long period by the desulfurization treatment. USE:A raw material for chemical industry, e.g. rubber and plastic, etc.
