A device for adjusting the angle of inclination of a motor vehicle seat by means of lantern gear teeth, for the purpose of obtaining small adjustment movements and actuation forces whilst maintaining self-locking the lantern gear teeth which are arranged in pairs being arranged in a plane rotated through 90 DEG with respect to one another so that in the case of an adjustment alternately two lantern gear teeth engage in one row of teeth and only one lantern gear tooth engages in the other row of teeth. The pivot axis of the lower frame which is mounted in lateral frame parts is located as near as possible below the centre of gravity of the occupant of the seat so that the adjustment device is as far as possible relieved of load.
