A process for the sealing of a porous coating of a hard material such as aluminium oxide, tungsten carbide, or chromium, applied to a workpiece by a plasma spray process, is characterised in that the coating is impregnated with a liquid, crosslinkable plastic or paint, and the layer of plastic or paint is hardened in vacuo, at least in its outward-facing region. A closed layer of the plastic or paint can thus be produced in the porous layer, and prevents the access of aggressive materials to the workpiece.
